Information from “Rīgas satiksme” for specific passenger categories regarding the use of public transport from June 1
"Rīgas satiksme" hereby informs that, pursuant to the decision of the Interim Administration of the Riga City Council of May 29, public transport fare discounts are reinstituted for specific categories of passengers. Discount recipients shall have their status renewed on their e-tickets automatically, effective from June 1.
The Interim Administration of the Riga City Council has reintroduced discounts to the original extent for passengers of the following categories:
- Employed seniority and old age pensioners who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga;
- Persons permanently residing in long-term social care and social rehabilitation institutions of Riga, who receive social care services paid by the Municipality of the City of Riga;
- Minor orphans and abandoned children with residence declared within the administrative territory of the city of Riga, who live in foster families, under custody of a guardian or in a childcare institution, or study at general or professional education institutions, colleges and higher education institutions, until they reach the age of 24.
Other public transportation fare discounts are partially reinstituted as follows:
- persons who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga (except for those whose declared address in Riga is a secondary address) or who own real property in Riga are allowed to purchase hourly tickets for EUR 1.15 and weekend hourly tickets for EUR 0.60;
- Students of higher education institutions registered within the administrative territory of the city of Riga, as well as students of higher education institutions registered outside the administrative territory of the city of Riga who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga, are allowed to purchase hourly tickets for EUR 0.30. Monthly travel cards have to be purchased at full price.
100% discounts shall apply between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM for the following passenger categories (outside this time and at weekends, passengers of these categories will have to purchase tickets for the price set for inhabitants of Riga):
- Unemployed seniority and old age pensioners aged below 75 who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga;
- Politically repressed persons and members of the National Resistance Movement who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga;
- Persons aged above 75 who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga;
- Members of the Chernobyl accident elimination team aged below 75 who have declared their residence within the administrative territory of the city of Riga.
The Interim Administration of the Riga City Council has allowed school students of grades 9 and 12 to continue using public transport without having to register their trips until July 7. In turn, students of grades 1 to 8, 10 and 11 can only use public transport with tickets bought at full price.
Persons who had access to these allowances up to the time of revocation thereof will have their public transportation fare discounts restored automatically; however, those who did not have this status before will have to visit one of the "Rīgas satiksme" customer service centres.

Full-priced tickets can be pre-purchased using street ticket vending machines or at over 400 retail areas across the territory of Riga. Passengers can use their current e-tickets – personal tickets, blank tickets, Riga resident's cards and student's e-cards – to purchase new tickets. In order to protect public transport drivers against the risk of infection, public transport drivers do not sell public transport tickets.
Please be reminded to assess the necessity of each trip before using public transport. If there is no other alternative, make sure to wear a mask to cover your mouth and nose in trams, trolleybuses and buses.
